An investor opens it on a phone between two meetings, scrolls fast, and stops only if something catches. A client opens it while half-listening on a call. In both cases you get roughly ninety seconds before a decision is made about whether to keep paying attention.

Three habits waste those ninety seconds.

Starting with the company instead of the problem. Nobody cares who you are until they care what you fix. Your founding story is interesting on slide seven and fatal on slide one.

Writing paragraphs. If a slide takes thirty seconds to read, it is a document, not a slide. The reader stops listening to you and starts reading — you have just made yourself redundant in your own meeting.

Hiding the number. Revenue, users, pipeline, signed letters of intent, whatever you have. Burying it on slide fourteen reads as embarrassment. If the number is small, say it plainly with its growth rate: small and doubling beats vague every time.

The eight slides a pitch deck template must contain

Order matters as much as content. This sequence works because each slide earns the next.

1. What you do, in one line

No metaphor, no mission statement. “We help independent restaurants fill their slow nights.” If someone repeats your line back correctly after the meeting, this slide worked.

2. The problem, with evidence

Not “restaurants struggle with marketing” — a specific, costly, verifiable problem. A number, a quote from a real customer, an observable behaviour. Evidence is what separates a problem from an opinion.

3. The solution, shown not described

A screenshot, a photograph, a before and after. Three sentences maximum. If your product is hard to show, that is a signal worth taking seriously.

4. Market, sized honestly

Top-down billions convince nobody. Build it from the bottom: how many buyers exist, what each pays, what share is realistically reachable in three years. A defensible small number beats an indefensible large one.

5. Traction, whatever you have

Revenue if you have it. Otherwise: users, retention, waitlist, pilots, repeat purchases. Show the trend, not the total. A chart going up and to the right with modest axes is more persuasive than a big number with no history.

6. How you make money

Price, unit, margin, and what it costs to acquire a customer. Founders skip this slide more than any other, and it is the one that separates a business from a project.

7. Team, framed as evidence

Not biographies. Why these specific people are unusually likely to solve this specific problem. One line each. Prior employers matter less than prior proximity to the problem.

8. The ask

How much, for what, and what it buys in months and milestones. “We are raising to grow” is not an ask. “Eighteen months of runway to reach two thousand paying accounts” is.

Eight. Anything else — competition, roadmap, detailed financials — belongs in an appendix that you open only if asked. A pitch deck template that ships with thirty slides is not being generous; it is handing you thirty decisions you now have to defend.

What people actually read first

Watch someone open a deck and you will see the same pattern: they read the headline of each slide in sequence, then stop at whichever one raises a question. The body text is read second, and only on the slides that earned it.

This has a direct consequence for any pitch deck template you use: the headlines must tell the whole story on their own. Read your eight headlines back to back with nothing else. If they do not form a coherent argument, no amount of design will rescue the deck.

Y Combinator makes the same point about clarity over polish in their guidance on designing a better deck: legibility and a single idea per slide beat visual sophistication in every room that matters.

The pitch deck template mistakes that kill a room

Ten-point type. If it is projected, it will be read from four metres away. Nothing below twenty-four point survives that.

Charts without axes. An unlabelled curve going up is a decoration, not evidence, and a numerate reader will notice within a second.

Competitor grids where you win every row. Nobody believes them. Choosing the two dimensions where you genuinely win, and conceding the rest, is far more credible.

A different font on slide nine. It signals the deck was assembled in a hurry, and it makes a reader wonder what else was.

Investors and clients need different decks

The same eight slides, weighted differently.

An investor is buying a future. They spend their attention on market, traction and team, because they are underwriting a bet on growth. The ask is the point of the meeting.

A client is buying an outcome next quarter. They barely care about your market size. They want the problem, the solution, proof it has worked for someone like them, the price, and what happens in week one. Replace the ask with a scope and a start date.

Using an investor deck in a client meeting is the single most common misuse of a pitch deck template — and it reads as though you are more interested in your company than in theirs.

Before you send it

Four checks, ten minutes, and they catch most of what goes wrong.

Read the headlines alone — do they argue? Open the file on a phone — is anything unreadable? Hand it to someone outside your field and ask what you do — do they get it in one line? Export to PDF and reopen it — fonts and layout survive, or you send a broken deck to the one person who matters.

A pitch deck template gets you to a first draft in an afternoon instead of a weekend. It does not do the thinking. The eight decisions above are the thinking, and they are the reason two decks with identical designs land completely differently.

Aller plus loin

If you would rather start from a structure that already follows this order, The Pitch Deck is a twenty-slide Canva template built exactly on these eight decisions — with the appendix slides separated out, and placeholder text that tells you what belongs on each slide and why, rather than lorem ipsum you have to decode.

It sits in the Modèles Canva collection alongside The Editorial Feed Kit, for the other room you have to convince — the feed.

And if the numbers on slides four to six are the part that worries you, what founders actually need before writing a business plan covers how to build them so they hold up to questions.

Questions fréquentes

How many slides should a pitch deck have?

Eight to twelve for the main deck, plus an appendix you open only when asked. Longer decks do not fail because of length — they fail because the argument is buried.

Should I send the deck before the meeting?

For investors, usually yes: they will ask anyway, and a deck that reads well alone is a good filter. For clients, prefer presenting it, then sending it after with the scope attached.

Does design matter?

Less than founders fear, more than they hope. Legible type, consistent spacing and honest charts cover ninety percent of it. Beyond that, design cannot fix a weak argument — and a strong argument survives a plain deck.

What if I have no traction yet?

Say so, and replace the slide with the closest evidence you have: pilots, waitlist, letters of intent, results from a previous company.
